SURFACE TENSION: A Public Fountain For The 21st Century

by Tamara Moscowitz

Closer to a flying saucer or fallen star is “Surface Tension” an animated, celebratory artwork designed to reflect the calming qualities of water – in this case that of the Thames River.

Taking a new approach to the design of a fountain or water sculpture that normally graces the forecourt of a hotel, the Jason Bruges Studio in London, designers of site specific installation art and interaction design, created a dynamic, kinetic artwork that reflects the spectacular context of the river.

Ingeniously conceived and engineered, the surface responds in the same way as the surface of the Thames - changing as the wind changes speed and direction. A wind sensor on the roof of the hotel detects the speed and direction of the wind in real time driving an ever-changing pattern of light on the surface of the sculpture.
